The Jordan 88 Racer that is featured here probably looks like it is one of Jordan Brand’s Air Jordan releases 2018 for Halloween, especially considering that it has been nicknamed “Fear.” After all, Halloween is a spooky celebration and spooky things tend to induce fear. However, the “Fear” nickname of this Jordan 88 Racer colorway might actually have nothing to do with Halloween, rather it seems to be drawing inspiration from Jordan Brand’s “Fear” Pack from 2013. Coincidentally, the Jordan Racer 88 borrows from the Air Jordan 3, which was included in the “Fear” Pack along with the Air Jordan 4 and the Air Jordan 5.
The inspiration and story behind Air Jordan “Fear” Pack was something quite different from what most sneakerheads are assumed and guessed. It was inspired by Michael Jordan’s fear of his own expectations and how he overcame them. Hence, the left and right insoles of the sneakers featured the phrases “I’M SCARED OF WHAT I WON’T BECOME” and “AND YOU’RE SCARED OF WHAT I COULD BECOME.” Jordan Brand borrowed both of them from their “Look Me In The Eyes” commercial that was a part of their “Become Legendary” campaign back in 2008. The Jordan Racer 88 iteration you see here seems to resemble all three colorways from the “Fear” Pack.
As you may know, the Jordan 88 Racer happens to be a hybrid of the Air Jordan 3 and the Nike Flyknit Racer, so it is more particularly inspired by the Air Jordan 3 from the “Fear” Pack. Its lightweight uppers are dressed up in a combination of Black and Night Stadium, while also featuring the Air Jordan 3’s elephant print overlays. Although this is not exactly a Halloween release, it features some Total Orange-colored detailing as well. Furthermore, its midsoles are plain White and its outsoles are covered in Black. This iteration has already joined recent Air Jordan releases 2018 and is currently available on Nike.com for $100.
