Professional BMX athlete Nigel Sylvester recently released the second installment of GO, his POV lifestyle and travel video series. At the time when he decided to ride BMX and become a professional bicycle rider, it apparently was not “the most popular thing to do.” However, Nigel describes himself as an artist, rather than “just a bike rider.” Through his GO video series, Nigel has become somewhat of a “global BMX ambassador.” Four years ago, Nigel Sylvester teamed up with Nike. By now you have likely figured out that upcoming Air Jordan releases are going to include the first ever Nigel Sylvester x Jordan Brand collaboration.
Nike & Nigel Sylvester’s Collaboration
The Nigel Sylvester x Nike collaboration from four years ago revolved around an SB Dunk High iteration dubbed “S.O.M.P,” which is an acronym for “Standing On My Pegs.” It was a nearly all-Black iteration with a safari texture appearing around the laces and over the heel panels, while its Nike “Swoosh” logos were covered in Silver. The Nigel Sylvester x Nike SB Dunk High “S.O.M.P.” made its retail debut on March 8th, 2014. Nigel was also involved in Nike’s recent Sport Pack campaign, which was unveiled earlier this month. Nike’s “Sport Pack” is a collection of sportswear apparel that draws inspiration from a variety of sports, including BMX.
It turns out that Nigel Sylvester often laces up in the Air Jordan 1 when riding BMW, which is the reason he picked the model for this collaboration. In case you are wondering why this iteration looks so discolored and worn out, the look is actually intentional and has been designed to be this way. The added wear and tear markings, the yellowed uppers, and the stitching of the outer Nike “Swoosh” logos, all represent what a BMX rider’s sneakers go through as they master their tricks. Additionally, it also features Black- and Varsity Red-colored detailing, while the inner, medial Nike “Swoosh” logos are made up of reflective material.
Set to join this month’s Air Jordan releases 2018, this collaborative sneaker will come in a box featuring “Jordan Biking Co., Est. 2017,” which also appears on its inner collars. It has apparently been confirmed that this Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG will make its retail debut on August 22nd, 2018, although its price is yet to be announced.
