The Nike Air Max “Palm” Pack Made Its Retail Debut On April 10th 2019

Amidst the Air Jordan releases 2019 that recently hit the shelves, this Nike Air Max Plus “Palm” Pack arrived at retailers as well. The Nike Air Max Plus became somewhat of a cultural phenomenon soon after it debuted back in 1998. Ever since, Nike has released countless iteration and numerous variations of the Air Max Plus. It was veteran Nike designer Sean McDowell who designed the classic running shoe utilizing groundbreaking manufacturing techniques. It also introduced Tuned Air and thus, became known as “Tn.” The “Palm” Pack that just made its retail debut is a nod to the aesthetic influence behind the Air Max Plus.

It may seem hard to believe but Sean McDowell came up with the concept for the Air Max Plus while spending time at the beaches of Florida. More specifically, he was inspired by the swaying palm trees that he saw “blowing in the wind” one evening around dusk. He immediately sketched the palm trees and that sketch was eventually transformed into the quarter panel of the Air Max Plus. For the shank of the Air Max Plus, he drew inspiration from a whale’s tale and simply modified it. As mentioned, the Air Max Plus debuted featuring the “Tn” branding, signifying that it was equipped with Nike’s Tuned Air cushioning.

One of these two Air Max Plus iterations sports a darker color scheme, while the other one has a lighter one. The darker one is dressed up in a combination of Blue, Navy and White, while the lighter one is dressed up in Green and White. Metallic Silver-colored overlays appear on both iterations and their midsoles are plain White. Another common detail that these two share is the Orange- and Red-colored accents that can be spotted over the media sides of the Air Max pod in the heels. This is apparently inspired by the original “Sunset” colorway of the Air Max Plus from 1998.
