The “MPLS” was a classic colorway of the Zoom Kobe 1 that Nike originally released back in 2006. It was among the original colorways of the Zoom Kobe 1, which was Kobe Bryant’s first signature sneaker model from Nike after he switched over from adidas. Before the Zoom Kobe 1, he was lacing up in the Nike Huarache 2K4 and 2K5, while he even rocked a few Air Jordan pairs as well. Ever since being originally introduced back in 2006, the Zoom Kobe 1 has never received the retro treatment before, until now. Nike is now set to release the Zoom Kobe 1 Proto in the “MPLS” colorway.
The Zoom Kobe 1 Proto was introduced back in February this year, during the first year of Kobe Bryant’s retirement. The “Proto” actually stands for performance retro, which is a concept that Kobe Bryant himself came up with as he was not content with the idea of having a retro line. The Zoom Kobe 1 Proto is the same model, but has been upgraded with modern day performance technology. First and foremost, this Proto version is far more lightweight. Furthermore, the Nike Zoom Air cushioning it is equipped with consists of a Zoom bag setup. The carbon fiber shank is also smaller and foam has been removed.
While the “MPLS” is an original Zoom Kobe 1 colorway, Nike has brought it back also as a nod to the Detroit Gems, the former name of the Los Angeles Lakers. It was back in 1947 when the Detroit Gems franchise was disbanded and the Los Angeles Lakers was formed in Minneapolis. “Land of 10,000 Lakes” is Minnesota’s nickname, which inspired the “Lakers” name. Like the original, this “MPLS” colorway of the Zoom Kobe 1 Proto is also dressed up in same color scheme of Grey, University Blue and White. It has already arrived at Nike.com and select stores, and should be available at a retail price of $175.
