Alongside upcoming adidas and Air Jordan releases 2019, Nike will release this special SB Dunk High dubbed “Dog Walker” on April 20th, 2019. Unless you are an active participant in cannabis culture, perhaps you are not familiar with the term 420 or the significance of April 20th (4/20). “420” is essentially slang for the consumption of cannabis or marijuana and today, April 20th is celebrated within the cannabis culture as 420 or Weed Day. Some have even claimed that “420” is a police code used when approaching someone smoking marijuana. However, even a lot of cannabis smokers do not know how 420 and April 20 became associated with weed.
The origin of 420’s association with cannabis consumption dates back to 1971 to the San Rafael High School in Marin County, Calif. Five students from the school would convene by their campus’ statue of French chemist Louis Pasteur at 4:20 to smoke weed. 4:20 was the ideal time for them to indulge in some cannabis smoking as their school’s extracurricular activities would conclude by then. The names of those students were Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, Mark Gravich and Steve Capper and they were eventually nicknamed the “Waldos” since they gathered by a wall. 420 ended up becoming their codeword for weed.
Nike has celebrated 420 Day previously too, with colorways like the “Cheech & Chong,” “Skunk” and “White Widow.” This SB Dunk High colorway is nicknamed “Dog Walker” because Dog Walker OG is the name of a potent cannabis strain. Taking a cue from its nickname, this iteration has a canine look with its multicolored uppers entirely covered in pony hair. The side panels are even feature a Dalmatian print, while its Red-colored nylon Nike “Swoosh” logos are meant to resemble a dog’s leash. Furthermore, pictures of dogs can be cover the insoles while a dog poop graphic with the “SB” branding can be spotted over the inner tongue tags.
