Back when Kyrie Irving was just 4 years old when he experienced probably the biggest loss of his life, nothing compared to all the losses that he has faced on the court. It was the loss of his mother, Elizabeth Ann Irving, and it was a loss that has always mattered to him, to this day. Back in 2015, the Shared Grief Project even shared a video on their YouTube channel featuring Kyrie Irving, in which he mentions that losing his mother at a young age “still hits” him. As a tribute to his late mother, Nike and Sneaker Room teamed up to design two special Kyrie 3 iterations.
Earlier in November, Kyrie Irving himself rocked one of these two special colorways of the Sneaker Room x Nike Kyrie 3 in a game between the Boston Celtics and the Brooklyn Nets. Since these two sneakers are a dedication to his deceased mother and mothers all over the world, so both of these colorways of the Sneaker Room x Nike Kyrie 3 have been dubbed “Mom.” Last month, Nike and Sneaker Room collaborated for a special Air More Money release, and 100% of the proceeds generated from it went to aid Breast Cancer treatment & research. This Sneaker Room x Nike Kyrie 3 “Mom” collaboration is for a similar purpose.
Suraj Kuafman, the owner of Sneaker Room, designed these two Kyrie 3 “Mom” colorways, paying reference to both, his own and Kyrie Irving’s life. Like Kyrie, Suraj’s mother has also passed away, so he incorporated Gold into the sneakers, since it was her favorite color. As a representation of the flower that so many people buy for their mothers, the upper ankle areas feature a Rose symbol. The inner lining features polka dots inspired by a polka dot shirt that Kyrie’s mom was wearing in an old photo. The tongues of the sneaker also feature special “Mom” branding, while the initials of Suraj’s and Kyrie’s moms “E.K.” and “E.I.” can be spotted on the back.
Further details include the Sneaker Room branding over the right insole and the “I love you Mom” special message on the left insole of each sneaker. Last but not least, speckling is visible over the midsoles, the entire outsoles appear to be covered in a heart pattern and each of the inner Nike “Swoosh” logos are covered in the word “LOVE.” These Sneaker Room x Nike Kyrie 3 colorways are definitely a special release. Each of the 250 pairs of the Red colorway will retail at a price of $200 and each of the 50 pairs of the Gold colorway will retail for $1,000. All the proceeds will go towards benefiting domestic women and family shelters.
