The Air Max 98 “La Mezcia” designed by Gabrielle Serrano for the 2018 Nike: On Air Contest will be among upcoming Air Jordan releases 2019. Back in 2018, Nike hosted workshops for its On Air Contest in multiple cities, namely London, New York City, Paris, Shanghai, Seoul and Tokyo. Thousands of Nike fans attended those workshops and drew inspiration from their local communities to design a variety of different Air Max and Air VaporMax colorways. Gabrielle Serrano was one of the six winners, who then proceeded to create the first samples of their designs with the help of Nike designers and developers.
Gabrielle Serrano, who is a native of Queens, came up with the concept for her Nike Air Max 98 colorway by drawing inspiration from her unique perspective of New York City. Despite being a first-generation American herself, Gabrielle comes from a family of immigrants. She also applied her experience in street photography when designing her Air Max 98 iteration. Its “La Mezcla” nickname is a Spanish word that translates to “the mix.” The Air Max 98 “La Mezcla” represents the diverse cultural background, ethnicity, race, and above, the people of New York City. Gabrielle Serrano also happens to be an avid sneakerhead and currently owns more than 800 pairs.
2018 marked the 20th anniversary of the Air Max 98, but that was not the only reason she chose it to serve as the canvas for her design. Her favorite is actually the Air Max 97, but she realized that her concept could be brought to life more effectively over the Air Max 98. The uppers of the Air Max 98 “La Mezcla” represent the cultural and ethnic diversity of New York City, more specifically the varying skin complexions of the locals. The Nike Air Max 98 “La Mezcla” and also the other winning colorways from the “On Air” Contest have already joined recent Air Jordan releases 2019.
