The time Penny Hardaway spent with Shaquille O’Neal as teammates in the Orlando Magic was quite historic and memorable. When Penny ended up in the Phoenix Suns as a result of sign-and-trade, it is unlikely that basketball enthusiasts were expecting him and Shaq to ever team up again over the course of their respective careers in the league. Surprisingly, both of them did land in the Miami Heat during the 2007-2008 season when the team was being coached by Pat Riley. So, no wonder that the month is scheduled to mark the Nike release 2016 of a “Miami Heat” colorway of the Air Penny 2.
It was back during the 1996-1997 NBA season that Nike introduced the Air Penny 2. The Swoosh apparently decided to upgrade the original Air Penny 1 model to improve its performance, while they also slightly changed its design as well. Nonetheless, the Nike Air and the Nike Zoom are features that the Air Penny 2 and its predecessor have in common. Nike dropped several colorways of the Air Penny 2 during the 1996-1997 NBA season and back in 2008, the silhouette even received the retro treatment for the very first time.
The “Miami Heat” nickname of the colorway likely makes it obvious that it sports a color scheme inspired by the team’s official colors. Reminiscent of Chicago Bulls-inspired sneaker, it features a “Bred” upper that is predominantly dressed up in Black, while Red and White appear as secondary hues. Moreover, distinct visible air unit of the sneaker and its piping sport a combination of Red and Yellow accents. Adding the finishing touch, Penny’s signature “1 Cent” branding can be spotted in Yellow with Red outlining it.
For fans of both Penny and Shaq, having this sneaker will definitely keep the memories of their teamwork alive. As per the Swoosh’s schedule, the Nike release 2016 of the Air Penny 2 “Miami Heat” will take place on March 18th, although it might also be up for grabs on eBay too.
