In addition to this month’s upcoming Air Jordan releases 2019, Nike is celebrating “Mamba Day” with this brand new colorway of the PG 3. Earlier in February, Nike released a PG 3 colorway to commemorate Black History Month. A new colorway of Paul George’s PG 3 inspired by the ACG line was also a part of Nike’s 2019 NBA All-Star Collection and it made its retail debut on February 15th at a price of $120. Nike has even teamed up with NASA to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 human spaceflight mission with a PG 3 colorway that will retail for $120 later in April 2019
While the PG 3 is technically Paul George’s third signature Nike sneaker model, Nike has designed the colorway you see to celebrate the historic and storied legacy of the “Black Mamba,” Kobe Bryant. It was the city of Los Angeles that first decided back in 2016 to annually celebrate Kobe’s illustrious career by declaring that August 24th (8/24) would thereon be recognized as “Mamba Day.” The two numbers were the ones that were separately featured on Kobe Bryant’s jerseys during separate periods of the 20 seasons he played as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. Kobe Bryant announced his retirement from professional basketball back in November 2015.
Every year, Nike has actually been releasing special colorways of their signature basketball sneaker models in celebration of Mamba Day and the PG 3 is the latest one to receive this treatment. Black and Yellow are somewhat recognized as Kobe’s signature hues, which explains the color scheme of this iteration. Apart from the obvious fact that it is dressed up in Black, Opti Yellow and White, it also features an abstract multi-colored geometric print all over its uppers. It also appears to be equipped with stripped laces and some exposed stitching can be spotted as well. Paul George’s usual branding is also visible on the heels and tongue tabs.
