This Dia de los Muertos and Halloween, Kobe Bryant commenced his latest post-basketball venture. Together with Nike, the former shooting guard of the Los Angeles Lakers recruited two LA artists to aid him for the launch his brand new sneaker model, the Kobe AD. Even a Day of the Dead celebration took place at the Downtown-based MAMA Gallery, complete with marigolds, religious candles, sugar skulls, and various jersey and photo effigies of the Black Mamba. This new silhouette is apparently meant to symbolize the rebirth and reincarnation of Kobe Bryant following the conclusion of his NBA career. Hence, the AD apparently stands for after death.
One of the artists that Kobe called on was Mark “Mister Cartoon” Machado, a Los Angeles graffiti and tattoo legend who had once tattooed Kobe himself. The other artist was Patrick Martinez. During the event, Kobe answered a several questions and also mentioned that the AD “after death” name refers to his transition after the end of his professional basketball career. After his retirement, Kobe also established Kobe Studios, a hybrid publishing-production house that has teamed up with Time Inc. for the distribution of an upcoming animated film. After the event, Kobe apparently even expressed his appreciation for hand drawn artwork in an email.
The debut Kobe AD was unveiled by Nike on November 1st. It appears to be a low-top model that is equipped with new Lunarlon foam midsoles and micro-tread traction. The heel plates and their hidden Zoom Air units also standout because of their extravagant iridescent aesthetics. Lockdown supports holds down its new mesh uppers, which also have Dynamic Flywire incorporated into them. The sneaker is apparently equipped with the Flyease lacing system and its tightness can be controlled using a unique wheel. The very first colorway of the model has been dubbed “Battle Grey” and its heels also feature DNA logos embroidered onto them.
There will apparently be another Black and White rendition of this Kobe Bryant’s brand new silhouette that will hit the shelves in the near future. As for this one, the Nike Kobe AD will make its retail debut on November 22nd on Nike.com and select retailers.
