It is likely that basketball enthusiasts and sneakerheads alike are still reeling from the fact that the legendary Kobe Bryant has retired from the sport of professional basketball. Of course, the show must go on and Nike must continue dropping their signature sneakers. In fact, even Jordan Brand decided to drop their Air Jordan 9 Low “Black / White” on the same day that a classic Nike Air Foamposite Pro colorway is scheduled to arrive at retailers. News and photos indicating the return of the Air Foamposite Pro “University Red” have been surfacing ever since mid-January and now it has finally arrived.
As 2016 kicked off, it was revealed by Nike that some OG iterations of the Air Foamposite Pro would be making a comeback at different points over the course of this year. It was around that time that it was also revealed that the OG “University Red” rendition of the Air Foamposite Pro would also be one of them. For those who do not remember this colorway very well, it had originally made its retail debut back in 2002. Based on reports, this year’s version will be almost identical to the original with just a single exception.
The only difference is that the foam shell uppers of this returning Air Foamposite Pro will once again be dressed almost completely in a university red hue instead of varsity red. Of course, the uppers are not entirely tonal, so the same ominous black hue that covers the leather eyestays of this sneaker also makes an appearance over the inner linings, laces and the side Nike Swooshes. Much like the 2002 OG, the heels and toe boxes also feature black mini Swooshes that have a red outline around them.
Around the same time as Kobe Bryant’s retirement, Nike also dropped several other sneakers, such as the LeBron 13 Elite and the KD 8 Elite. Moreover, even the Nike Air Foamposite Pro “University Red” has hit the shelves on the same day as the Air Jordan 9 Low “Black / White,” i.e. April 16th.
